Hondor, 16, took first place in the Cadet Men's Épée division, defeating Teddy Lombardo of Westchester, New York, 15-14, in the final bout on Feb. 19 Male Athlete of the Week (1/2/17 - 1/7/17): Mike Giordano, Hockey Junior Mike Giordano was never supposed to be the Athlete of the Week, well at least not for this sport, in our school. After dropping hockey as a competitive sport a few seasons ago, Malden High School would never have expected to have a star hockey player in their school. But after forming a co-op team with Revere High School last year, that is just what they got. Giordano is the team's first line center and has helped propel them to a 3-2 record so far this seasons with a team leading 6 goals and 6 assists. Oh and did we mention that he also skated on a baseball field? The Malden/Revere co-op was part of 14 schools that competed at Frozen Fenway 2017. Not bad for a hockey player from a school without their own team. Female Athlete(s) of the Week (12/12-12/18): Batoul and Nour Chouiki- Track and Field The freshman duo has immediately impacted the Tornado Track and Field team this season. The twins biggest moment came at the recent MSTCA Festival Invitational in Boston. Their scores of 1:47.42 for Nour and 1:47.93 for Batoul represent the 3rd and 4th fastest times among freshman runners in the state of Massachusetts in the 600 meter event. Female Athlete of the Week (10/23-10/29): Jasmine Gray
Girls' Cross Country Gray became Malden's first overall individual GBL champion since 2006 and did so in dramatic fashion. Gray, after leading the race from the start, was passed by two Medford runners with 150 meters to go. Gray, summoning up a reserve only she possesses, sprinted to catch the two runners and dove for the line, out-leaning them both at the finish. Thanks to Gray's efforts, the girls' won 26-29 securing the Malden girls' the GBL title and their 34th straight win!
